Disposing of Household Chemical Wastes

Household Chemical Waste (HCW) and Household

Hazardous Waste (HHW) are terms used to describe common products used in

a variety of cleaning, painting, pest control and yard work activities. Careless

storage and disposal of household chemicals can pose serious environmental

and human health threats.

The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County, IL (SWALCO) offers free HCW/HHW

collections for residents during the spring, summer and fall, and has recently

expanded its HCW/HHW program to include public drop-off days at the Warren

Township facility. SWALCO will accept public drop-off of household chemical

waste at the Warren Township facility only on the dates and times specified. For

other locations and dates, please call SWALCO at 847-336-9340 or check their

website (www.swalco.org).

The following materials are typical household chemical wastes that are accepted

at a one-day HCW/HHW collection. To help you determine if something is a

household chemical waste, look for the words “danger,” “toxic,” “flammable,”and/or “reactive” somewhere on the product's packaging.

Residential Services

Warren Township contracts with Waste Management to provide trash, recycling

and yard waste collection services to residential households.

Weekly curbside service is provided to single-family homes, duplexes and most

multi-family properties (i.e., condominiums and townhomes).

General Guidelines

All solid waste materials must be placed out at the curb for collection by

6:00 a.m. the day of your scheduled collection, but not before 5:00 p.m.

the day before your pick up. Please keep in mind that separate trucks pick

up trash, recycling and yard waste, so each of these materials may be picked

up at different times of the day. Garbage and recycling should be at ground

level, at the curb, street, or road in front of each residential unit and at least

5 feet from stationary objects (mailboxes, basketball hoops, vehicles, etc.).

Toters/carts should be placed handle toward house.

All containers and any solid waste materials that are not collected must

be removed from the curb by 8:00 a.m. the day after your scheduled
